Stunningly set in and around a pool of water, 'Metamophoses' is a visual and aural feast. Inspired by Ovid's mythological tales, this play weaves a tapestry of Greek stories together using water, movement, poetic dialogue and live original music.
The Body in Space Theatre Company is the same team that created last year's Star Seed, a piece that blew the viewing public away and Metamorphoses, while more mature in content, will share the same innovation, physicality, polish and daring in its presentation.
Star Seed Review:
Stupendous. Go. I am just as impressed now with the production two dozen people are performing here in Nelson as I ever was by the international Cirque du Soleil. - Nelson Mail.
Metamorphoses was first presented in Nelson by the company as part of the 2011 Arts Festival, where it received a standing ovation on the opening night. Ever since there has been a strong desire by the company, encouraged by fans of the show, to perform it again.
It is pleasing to see Nelson give excited, unrestrained appreciation to a local theatre group. - The Nelson Mail, 2011.
The main challenge of the production is the large amount of water involved. Some of the eight strong cast become soaked early in the show and are forced to shiver through the rest of the performance. The Theatre Royal are charitably taking on the risk of the large volume of water, and Body in Space will have to take out extra insurance to allow the show to happen. Audience members are promised a very different layout when they enter the theatre. There are special 'splash seats' for those happy to get close to the action at a discounted rate.
Mary Zimmerman's 'Metamorphoses' is a beautiful and moving piece of theatre- in a pool! Don't miss the splendour and excitement of this special show.
