The magnificent Cynthia Fortitude is definitely in the twilight of her long career as operatic diva. Tonight, she has arrived to give a musical lecture for the inaugural meeting of the Nelson Tasman Opera Guild (NELTOG). Her longsuffering accompanist, Miss Gertrude Rallentando, is nowhere to be found, so Cynthia must battle on without her.

“I wanted to honour the character of Gertie,” Helen says. “My good friend, Rose Beauchamp, who played Gertie for thirty years with me in Hens’ Teeth, The Legend Returns and Cynthia & Gertie Go Baroque, sadly died in 2022, and I wanted the delicious character of Gertie to live on somehow.” Gertie does not appear in this show of course, but is very present in all sorts of ways!

“Helen Moulder’s determined, dotty and totally delightful Cynthia…. an unbeatable gem of a comic character.” – Laurie Atkinson, Dominion-Post

“A most enduring clown, an irreverent and fanciful diva.” – Thomas La Hood, Theatreview

Following a sell-out season of Seussical in 2023, Nayland College brings you Playbill's most produced school musical of 2023 - The Addams Family - School Edition.

In the kooky, upside-down world of the Addams Family, to be sad is to be happy, to feel pain is to feel joy, and death and suffering are the stuff of their dreams. Nonetheless, this quirky family still has to deal with the same challenges faced by any other family, and the spookiest nightmare faced by every family - the Addams kids are growing up.

The Addamses have lived by their unique values for hundreds of years and parents Gomez and Morticia, would be only too happy to continue living that way. Their dark, macabre, beloved daughter Wednesday, however, is now an eighteen-year-old young woman who is ready for a life of her own. She has fallen in love with Lucas Beineke, a sweet, smart boy from a normal, respectable family — the most un-Addams sounding person one could be! And to make matters worse, she invited the Beinekes to their home for dinner. In one fateful, hilarious night, secrets are disclosed, relationships are tested, and the Addams family must face up to the one horrible thing they’ve managed to avoid for generations: change.

Presented by Nelson Youth Theatre Company.

Since 2002, over 16 million theatregoers in 28 countries have been thrilled by this awe-inspiring production which is based on the songs of Queen with a book by Ben Elton (The Young Ones, Blackadder, Popcorn).

Elton fashioned this hilarious futurist comedy around more than 24 of Queen’s biggest hit songs, including ‘We Are The Champions’, ‘Radio Ga Ga’, ‘I Want To Break Free’, ‘Somebody To Love’, ‘Killer Queen’, ‘Don’t Stop Me Now’, ‘Under Pressure’, ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, ‘Another One Bites The Dust’ and of course, ‘We Will Rock You’.

The musical takes place in a future age, on a planet once called Earth, that is now controlled by a mighty corporation...rock music is unheard of and all musical instruments are banned. The hope of breaking free rests with an unlikely resistance – an alliance of rebel Bohemians.
