"the most electrifying string quartet concert in recent memory" Dallas News
This brilliant young quartet from Hungary, currently taking Europe by storm, makes its debut in New Zealand. In this programme they pair the classics, Haydn and Mozart, with Bartók and the great Hungarian modernist Ligeti - humourists, colourists and musical explorers without equal.
The Kelemen Quartet has developed a world-wide following since winning the Musica Viva Grand Prize at the 2011 Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition. Led by Barnabás Kelemen, who delighted audiences playing Mozart with the Auckland Philharmonia, the quartet is a family affair, featuring Kelemen's wife, her sister, and a fellow colleague at the Liszt Academy.
Most of them been playing together since childhood, and all four of them are fully fledged soloists with first prizes that range from the Mozart competition in Salzburg to the Bartók and Szigeti Violin Competitions. Barnabás was Hungary's Classical Musician of the Year in 2003, and has been honoured by the Hungarian government with several awards that include the Franz Liszt Prize and Hungarian Order of Merit.
Hungarian passion. Classical perfection. Contemporary fire.
