NBS Nelson City Brass brings the grandeur of the Royal Albert Hall, London to the Theatre Royal Nelson in this celebration of a wide range of music culminating in one of the greatest audience participation sing-a-longs in concerts!

The 'real' Last Night of the Proms is the finale of 90 concerts held during July, August and September. The 'Last Night' is an informal, dress-up event where attendees have to have attended concerts during the regular prom season. The music is diverse, engaging and highly entertaining, and NBS Nelson Brass looks forward to welcoming you for our own Nelson Last (and only) Night of the Proms. Don't miss out.

Showquest is a nationwide performing arts programme and a platform for youth voices to be heard. Be amazed by original stage performances combining Art, Music, Dance, Drama, Culture and Technology. The Nelson Marlborough West Coast Brass Band Competition returns to Nelson and we invite you to join us for the 'Festival of Brass' where bands present a competition programme with a focus on stagecraft, 'lighter' pieces, and a featured soloist from within the band.

Judged by two music judges (Mark Carter, NZSO and Cameron James, NZ Army Band) and entertainment judge, MP for Nelson Rachel Boyack, this will be a great night of Brass Band entertainment.

A magical illusion and circus spectacular is coming to Nelson. New Zealand’s own Circus of Illusion Magic Show is 90 minutes of fast-paced family entertainment.

Featuring New Zealand’s premiere Illusionist Andre Vegas and Company performing large-scale mind-blowing illusions. From Andre’s classic dove act, appearing a motorcycle, Drop Spike illusion, and as seen on NZ’s Got Talent the ‘Blade’ illusion.

Another highlight, witness the incredible and stunning Andre de Jong and Eve Gordon. A world-class dynamic aerial and acrobatic duo whose breathtaking performances will include adagio, double trapeze and Spanish web. A stunning display of trust, strength, and poetic grace.

Special guest artist, from the Gold Coast, Australia, Joel Fenton. Known as the Cirque Stuntman, see him get sucked inside a giant balloon. With a mix of comedy and audience participation, he will have you on the edge of your seat as he juggles a chainsaw.

New Zealand’s leading female magician, Felicity Rogers, will be weaving magic, puppetry, dance and theatre into her mesmerising original performances. In addition, Felicity will turn the traditional gender roles in ‘magic’ upside down by sawing a man in half!

Kids look out for Felicity’s 10-year-old son Leonardo who will also put in an appearance, presenting his very own illusion in the show.

The magical Matariki Glow Show will tour New Zealand from May 2025, through the school terms and holidays! The Glow Show is an extraordinary experience that educates as it entertains, delivering an utterly original event for all the family.

This year, the Glow Show tells the story of te kāhui whetū o Matariki (the star cluster/whānau of Matariki) as they gather to light up the skies for te tau hou Māori (Māori New Year). But where is the smallest star, Waipuna-a-rangi? Could the little one be lost in the moana?

The Glow Show brings the beautiful Matariki myths to life with its unique puppets, intriguing tamariki wherever it goes.

Delightfully told in te reo Māori and English, the Matariki Glow Show shares themes of whakawhanaungatanga, friendship and togetherness. It offers a truly memorable experience with positive and uplifting messages for tamariki.

Gillian Francis’ Academy of Dance presents a classical ballet production of the traditional tale, bringing to life a captivating display of the beloved characters that we all know and love from films and musicals.

With guest dancer Oliver Carruthers from Auckland, the ballet retells this magical story. As in previous seasons of Nelson Academy of Dance, you will be treated to stunning staging and costumes, making this a performance not to be missed.

When the Theatre Royal is not in use, we can take small groups on a tour around the building.

Learn about the history and the major refurbishment, look at 19th century artefacts, and see the technical side of the theatre, with backstage and on stage access.

Please note, there are quite a few stairs to negotiate.
