Parihaka - the story of peaceful resistance and the heritage of our time and place.

As part of the Nelson Heritage Festival, Te Oro Haa presents the Parihaka story by weaving waiata, kapa haka, te reo Māori and ancient Māori sounds. Remembering the invasion of 1881, the Government reconciliation in 2017 and the Parihaka legacy into the future, this performance celebrates the uniqueness of our people, land and spirit.

Sri Lanka, an island nation in the Indian Ocean boasts about a documented history of over 2,500 years. Being a key trading post over several centuries connecting east and west of the ancient trade routes, the influence of Theravada Buddhism and the colonisation which began in 1500s with the arrival of the Portuguese, followed by the Dutch and finally the British have mainly influenced Sri Lankan Cultural heritage to be so diverse and vibrant.

You'd be able to experience an authentic Sri Lankan cuisine which has close ties with South and Southeast Asian cuisines, and the notable influence of middle eastern and Dutch cuisines. A cultural performance, range of local games with a stall displaying key elements of the Sri Lankan heritage and adaptation of modern technology will be presented.

Event schedule:
11 15 AM: Cultural performance (Music, dance and performing arts)
12 30 - 2 PM: Lunch (enjoy an authentic Sri Lankan meal)
2 30 PM: Local games with prizes to be won (Indoor and outdoor activities)
11 AM - 4 PM: A stall displaying key elements of Sri Lankan heritage (including a unique opportunity to see how locals embrace technology at cultural/religious events)

Illuminate kids’ hearts and minds with this magical giant-scale glow-in-the-dark puppet show! Go under the sea with a courageous Kina on her journey of discovery across the Pacific Ocean to Aotearoa. It’s a delightful story of our kai moana and the whakatauki ‘He waka eke noa. We are all in this together.’

This innovative, cutting edge concept features 40+ glow-in-the-dark puppets under UV lights in a black box theatre environment. 15,000+ children saw the extraordinary Matariki Glow Show in 2017/18 and 25,000+ children saw it in 2019. The ALL NEW Te Moana Glow Show is a must-see for 2020!

The production was created by puppet designer/creator Sarah Burren who collaborated with composer/musical director Midge Perez. They have an impressive history, having worked together on 20 children’s shows. Sarah has been involved in the concept/design/production of over 100 stage shows and live events both in NZ and internationally. They sought the guidance and approval of kaumātua Dr Haare Williams (amorangi in arts, culture and education) to create a story that ignites the spirit and pride of our tamariki.

Recommended for ages 2 – 10. This production is suitable for special needs children.

The Royal New Zealand Ballet is delighted to expand the company's much-loved regional touring programme in 2020, featuring works tailor-made for the RNZB by trail blazing choreographers at home in New Zealand and on the world stage.

A family programme for all ages, watch the dancers of the RNZB perform some of their favourites works.

Inspired by the goddess of the hunt and of the moon, Sarah Foster-Sproull's Artemis Rising was created in 2019 as a retirement gift for the much-loved former RNZB Principal Abigail Boyle. Remember, Mama is a tender look at the relationships between mothers and sons, from childhood to old age.

Berceuse by US choreographer Penny Saunders, a rapturous, deeply musical pas de deux to a lyrical lullaby by Benjamin Godard, was created in 2011 for the ground-breaking contemporary Hubbard Street Dance in Chicago.

Completing the line-up is a new classical work, Wayward, by young Canadian dancer and choreographer Kiara Flavin, who joined the RNZB in 2018.

Nelson City Brass presents Showtime - Hits of the Stage and Screen

Fresh from winning the NZ national B grade championship, Nelson's city band, who have now been promoted to the A Grade, will present an evening of Hits from many stage and screen shows. You will hear music from Indiana Jones, Star Wars, Phantom of the Opera, and Disney Tunes.

The guest artist is NZ virtuoso cornet player John Lewis. John comes from Dunedin and is a multiple NZ Champion Cornet soloist as well as Australian Champion. John is the Principal Cornet player of the National Band on NZ, conducted by Nelson City Brass's musical director Nigel Weeks, when they were placed second at the World Brass Band Championship.

The African savannah comes to life on stage in Disney’s The Lion King Jr.  Nelson Youth Theatre Company presents the one-of-a-kind musical  that has captivated the imagination of audiences around the world.

We will follow the rise of Simba, a young lion who will succeed his father, Mufasa, as King of the Pride Lands. But after Simba’s malevolent uncle, Scar, kills Mufasa and tricks Simba into believing he caused it, Simba flees and encounters meerkat Timon and warthog Pumba who help mature him into a grown lion who eventually returns to confront Scar.

A wonderful musical for young and old to enjoy, featuring the combined creativity of Elton John and Tim Rice in this delightful retelling of a much loved story.

Nelson Repertory's One Act Play Festival is a combination of Nelson/Tasman talent, involving three Theatre Groups: Nelson Repertory, Wakefield Country Players and MíleGrá Creative. There are 5 one act plays: 2 per evening, and a Saturday matinee especially for the children and family groups.

There are different plays per evening; some repeat performances but not all, so don't miss out. Plays include premier performances of RSVP and My Father My Son, well known favourites like BadJelly The Witch, The Real Inspector Hound, Leonardo's Last Supper, Tess and Flo and Lucy in the Sky.

Come to one evenings performance or buy a concession ticket and get to see all plays except BadJelly which has special matinee pricing.
