Dance by Neil Ieremia Featuring the Music of Antonio Vivaldi
A poetic ode to our troubled world, As Night Falls is Artistic Director Neil Ieremia’s latest evening length work, beautifully set to the timeless and passionate sound of Antonio Vivaldi.
"Neil Ieremia creates a new masterpiece. As Night Falls is full of inventive choreography and thoughtful concepts." - National Business Review, 2016
Following a sold-out Auckland season in 2016, and a 10-centre tour of the United States, Black Grace and Tour Makers are proud to tour this exceptional work to 8 venues throughout Aotearoa.
"As Night Falls is bold and bright like the colourful muumuu dresses worn by my mother without shame or ceremony.I had initially wanted this work to be the expression of my concerns and fears of the darkness that seems to be eroding the value of equality and human life. Instead, I feel compelled to respond with a contrasting beauty and physical vitality, musicality and hope. It is my offer of beauty for ashes." - Neil Ieremia
"Dancers impeccably present Ieremia’s choreography, leaving the audience in awe of their strength, stamina and accomplishment." - New Zealand Herald, 2016
A 1940's story about the world at home.
Rosie Can Do It is a story about the world at home in New Zealand during World War II. The title and theme for this year's annual SOUNDSTAGE concert is inspired by the iconic image of Rosie the Riveter from the World War II propaganda poster "We Can Do It". As relevant today, as then, the show explores the roles that we play in work and at home and the dreams and expectations that drive us to follow our hearts and fulfil our obligations to ourselves and our community.
Our largely female cast will prove that girls can do anything, especially if you are ready with a pair of gumboots. All singing, all dancing and all inspired by a backdrop of swinging 1940's classics and timeless modern anthems, our cast of many will delight and entertain you and leave you feeling that together we can achieve anything.
Presented by the 2017 students of SOUNDSTAGE Nelson and written and complied by Jane Winter.
SOUNDSTAGE music and performing arts school has been offering professional music and performing arts tuition to the talent of Nelson for the last 10 years.

Gumboot dancing was born out of the oppressive gold mines of South Africa. Forbidden to speak and in almost complete darkness, the slave laborers developed their own language by slapping their gumboots and rattling their ankle chains. In time it has developed into a truly unique dance form ...
It would be tempting to describe Gumboots as a South African version of Tap Dogs or even Lord of the Dance. The "gumboots" of the title Stimela "The Gumboot" musical refers to boots that South African mineworkers used to wear. Often adorned with bottle tops, they could also be used as percussive instruments as the workers performed a variety of dances.
Most recently, they've been endorsed as a symbol of self-expression and liberation by the Stimela The Musical of Soweto. Although some of the songs are traditional, most of the material was written by Mthakathi Entertainment, the show's director, and Thapelo Motloung, and should appeal to fans of South African pop and of Ladysmith Black Mambazo & The Lion King.
It is a celebration of song and dance, an international phenomenon that has swept across the globe like a tidal wave of soaring voices and stomping feet.
Unrivaled in its energy and physicality, it celebrates the body as a musical instrument whilst highlighting South Africa's rich and complex culture.
Peter Pan, a free spirited and mischievous young boy who can fly and never grows up, spends his never-ending childhood having adventures on the mystical island of Neverland as the leader of the lost Boys, interacting with fairies, pirates, mermaids, Native American Indians, and occasionally ordinary children from the world outside Neverland. Featuring some of our promising ballet dancers in this dramatic and fun filled adventure.
Showcase: Jazz and Contemporary students aged 5-16 years showcase their skill, precision, technique and focus in a variety of dance styles. Concluding with a Finale performance from our very own Rebecca Bignall Boutique Dance Company.
The Showcase demonstrates how hard they have worked this year and clearly they have loved every minute of their performance.
Talented performers from throughout the region perform Classical Ballet, Lyrical, Contemporary, Hip Hop and Jazz numbers.
Following a successful year with performances throughout NZ, and an exciting dance tour to LA and Las Vegas, the dancers are excited to showcase their talents and what they have achieved this year, from beginners through to senior dancers looking ahead to further their dancing overseas.
