Whakatau mai rā, whakatau mai rā, whakatau mai rā
A performance written and performed by Donna McLeod to remember and honour the people and events that happened at Parihaka and Whakatū, connecting the past to the future so that we may be reconciled and move peacefully forward.
The performance looks at reconciliation and the settlement of Parihaka and asks if there is reconciliation in the settlement of the Nelson Tenths. The stories are told by weaving waiata, kapa haka, te reo Māori and ancient Māori sounds.
The Parihaka leaders Tohu Kākahi and Te Whiti o Rongomai were held under house arrest in Whakatū. Their legacy and the Parihaka Principles are important to us today in Whakatū. The show aims to teach us about this heritage, here in Whakatū, and Aoteraroa.
